Description

An introduction to methods of analysis and methods of research as used in scholarly literature on the history of decorative arts, industrial design and the domestic interior. Methods of analysis are viewpoints to analyze research material and relevant contexts. Methods of research are e.g. the study of archives and primary historical sources.

This specialization of art history considers: the object as such; the artist, designer, workshop and (industrial) producer; the commissioner and consumer; commercial enterprises and networks; exhibitions. All can be studied according to different approaches and/or contexts: stylistic; social, with technological and economic aspects; iconographical/iconological and semiotic; gender; historic and contemporary reception. Approaches and contexts will almost always have an historical component.

Using case studies from literature, both ‘classics’ representing a long research tradition as well as recent ones, students will critically analyze and discuss different methods of analysis and research with the lecturers. In jointly prepared sessions and instructions from the lecturer, students will present their reading of case studies to group. The preparation of their presentation will be used for their class paper. For each session ca. 60 pages of literature will have to be read and analyzed. Chosen subjects partly depend on the interests of students. A schedule of the sessions and presentations will be discussed during the first meeting.

Course objectives

The seminar aims at confronting students with both methods of analysis and methods of research. Students will develop an attitude towards recognizing different methods in scholarly texts. They will gain insight as to wich method or viewpoint is used for a particular subject or thesis. They will learn to make well defined choices as to which method or viewpoint is possible and plausible for a given subject or thesis.

The seminar will cover the diversity of the field of decorative art, industrial design and the domestic interior and at the same time introduce students to scholarly discourse in the field. Discourses from other studies in the humanities will be used to gain insight into problems related to decorative art.
