Description
This course will explore the history of early Netherlandish art with a particular focus on the work of the painter Rogier van der Weyden. A curiously under-studied and under-researched artist, Van der Weyden has recently been the subject of revived interest amongst art historians. Looking at Van der Weyden’s work in the broader context of early Netherlandish painting, particularly in comparison to Jan van Eyck, we will take a close look at those qualities deemed unique to Van der Weyden’s work. We will also take a critical look at how art historians have described Van der Weyden’s style. As a class, we will pursue an innovative way of rethinking how this painter’s oeuvre can be interpreted and understood.
Students are encouraged to pursue research topics on Van der Weyden, but other topics will also be allowed. This includes but is not limited to studies of other painters from this period (for example Jan van Eyck, Hans Memling, Petrus Christus and Hugo van der Goes), or studies of other media (for example sculpture and tapestry).
