Description
During this class we will critically engage with recent studies of local religious culture in the West and in China. We will read and discuss representative works, but each student should also select a topic for in-depth investigation. Topics will vary, but may include local cults, festivals and rituals, charismatic cults and leaders, efficacy as an issue, secularization, and so forth.

- analytical engagement with the field that goes beyond empirical study 
- contextualisating religious culture within society at large 
- developing academic skills such as oral presentation and writing essays 
Course load
in total 280 hours (10 EC x 28 uur)
- 24 contacthours (12 weeks x 2 contacthours) 
- 72 hours of preparation for the meetings (12 weeks x 6 hours of preparation) 
- 16 hours of preparation of an oral presentation 
- 168 hours to research and write an essay

Test method
The final essay will determine the note, but regular attendence and participation are expected of all participants.
