This course is intended to review state-of-the-art developments in social psychological theory and applications on social judgement and decision making. Each course meeting aims to provide an in-depth analysis of a particular topic, based on:
a recent publication reviewing a substantial body of recent research, to illustrate applications of this theoretical knowledge in the analysis of concrete problems
empirical articles demonstrating cutting-edge research on this topic.
On the basis of assigned readings, each student will orally present a topic, after which further explanation and discussion will follow. On the basis of the seminar meetings and relevant reading, each student will prepare an analysis of a particular topic, which consists of:
a critical review of the literature relevant to the chosen topic
a theory-based analysis of an existing societal problem relevant to that topic.
Written assignments, oral presentations, and work during the meeting will all be used to acquire in-depth theoretical knowledge, and to practice the analysis of practical problems in terms of their underlying social psychological processes. In the end paper, students have to provide a specified research question, hypotheses with rationale based on literature reviews, and a proposed research design to test their hypotheses.
