Several lectures on advanced research methods in physical anthropology and practical study of a number of archaeological skeletons (age, sex, stature determination, and pathology)

Written report based on guidelines that will be provided
Method of instruction
1 hour lectures on advanced methods, 4 hours practical sessions where students work on analysis of skeletons. However, primarily self-directed working in small groups.

Learning objectives:
To be able to determine and differentiate parts of the human skeleton while unsupervised;
To be able to apply the (advanced) methods and techniques for age, sex and stature determination
To learn to recognize the most common pathological abnormalities and identify what injuries or diseases were responsible for them while unsupervised;
To learn to create an inventory, undertake an analysis and produce an evaluation of human remains;
To learn to write a report on the research questions, the applied methods and techniques, and the results and conclusions. (Instructions about the form of the report will be supplied). In addition, the ability to disseminate these findings to a wider audience will be developed;
To be able to function in a multidisciplinary research group.
Language
Languages of instruction with be both Dutch and English.
Timetable
This course will be taught from 30 March till 27 May 2010. Lectures/practical sessions will occur on Tuesdays from 10.00 t0 12.00 and on Thursdays from 13.00 to 16.00 hrs.
