The Origins of Egyptian civilization

Requirement:

a BA degree (or equivalent) in Archaeology, Egyptology, Art History, Classics, and any other relevant disciplines.

Description:

The course deals with the emergence of unique culture and complex society in Egypt in the 5th-3rd millennia BC, through studying various topics like intensification of food production, concentration of human population at specific sites, emerging inequality in burials, specialisation in craft production, expansion of interregional exchange network, appearance of symbolic items, construction of monumental architecture, and development of writing.

Learning objectives:

  • To understand the development of culture and society in the 5th-3rd millennia BC, with a foxus on an independent chosen subject

  • To have knowledge of the current state of research into the origins of Egyptian civilisation

  • To be able to critically assess current research and literature on this subject and voice one’s own well argumented opinion

  • To be able to choose a research topic, find relevant literature and present this via a PowerPoint-presentation and is able to handle a stimulating discussion afterwards

  • To write a paper on his/her study topic, while assessing the literature critically and presenting his/her own opinion and incorporating the received feedback of the presentation

Method of instruction:

The course consists of 1 organisational meeting, 1 introductory lecture by the instructor, and 5 class meetings for student presentation. Students are asked to give an oral presentation on a topic and to lead a discussion, and thereafter to write an essay about the topic, and another essay about any other topics, by using the literature suggested in the reading list.

Assessment:

Class attendance (1 ects), oral presentation (2 ects) and two essays (2 ects)
