A systematic course in reading Maya hieroglyphic writing accompanied by an introduction to Maya linguistics. It comprises a historical overview of decipherment and a comprehensive introduction into the calendar, structure and linguistics of Maya Hieroglyphic Writing (phonology, orthography grammar, syntax). It further provides the analytical techniques for the study of Maya texts and is supplemented by a basic vocabulary. The course is structured into chapters which contain particular lessons in electronic form. The chapters gradually introduce into the Maya writing system with detailed explanations and translations.

Remarks: This course may be chosen instead of any of the other courses of the BA specialisation in the second or third year.

Method of instruction
E-learning: interactive exercises supplemented to each chapter enable participants to check their knowledge. The course includes also both “real” and virtual workshops. Leiden staff will provide additional orientation.
Examination
Assignments of the e-learning course: tests after each unit and written final exam, individual tasks, workshops.
