Focus of the course will be Arabic poetry in its literary and historical context. Classical as well as modern poems will be studied with due attention to their performance context and the continuity of the poetical tradition. Arabic texts as well as background literature will be studied. A reader will be available. This year’s poet in residence, the Iraqi poet Khaz’lal al-Majidi, will be involved in the course.
