This course aims to familiarise students with historical developments in the Caucasus and Central Asian addressing all key aspects of socio-political and cultural themes such as ethno-linguistic identities, migration and religion. The historical span of the course begins with the rise of Islam in the seventh century and the gradual formation of the early Central Asian Empires. The expansion of the Persian, Turkic and Islamic cultures and the subsequent hegemony of Russian colonialism in the mid-nineteenth century will also be the focus of this course. This course provides an overview of basic methodological questions relating to historical analysis and will enable students to develop a better understanding of how the Caucuses and Central Asia contribute to the world history and civilisation.
