Objectives/ aim
Learning to conduct a research project and to write a scientific report thereof at the academic Master’s level. In both practical work and writing the student should demonstrate his or her:
knowledge and understanding of the field, thus providing a basis and opportunity for originality in developing and applying ideas;
problem solving abilities in new or unfamiliar environments within broader contexts;
ability to integrate knowledge and to handle complexity;
ability to clearly communicate conclusions, and the knowledge and rationale underlying these conclusions, to specialist audiences.
Content
The number of ECTS will be between 29.0-49.0 (dependents on profile)
In order to achieve the objectives the student familiarises him/herself with the existing knowledge in the field to which the research question pertains. He/she carries out individual research in order to obtain answers to the research questions and participates as a member of the research team, in the departmental and/or laboratory consultations and in work discussions.
This research project includes the usual stages of planning and preliminary literature research, the research itself and reporting of the results, both written and orally.
Form of tuition
Research internship. At the end of the internship the student must present and document his/her results in a report (with guidance and corrections of the scientific supervisor(s) and of Communication in Science tutors). Outcomes are also communicated to peer students by an oral presentation at the yearly Biomedical Sciences Symposium.
Mode of assesment
The student is assessed on the following aspects:
Project activities (knowledge, skills, independence, originality, scientific quality, social skills, motivation)
Written report (scientific content; scientific writing skills)
Oral presentation (content/structure, presentation skills)
More detailed information on the assessment can be obtained through the assessment forms available through LUMC’s educational webpages.
Entry requirements/recommended prior knowledge
Bachelor diploma Biomedical Sciences or equivalent.
Remarks
JRP-I needs to be approved beforehand by the examination board. Therefore, please send in an application form at least four weeks before the foreseen start of your project. JRP-I is subject to the Procedures Training Periods/Research Projects. These regulations require detailed written agreements in the application form between supervisor and student, that specify the conditions for the Research Project. Please consult these regulations beforehand through LUMC’s educational webpages (or blackboard) and act accordingly.
Please also check the following document on Blackboard: Role of ‘Communication in Science’ (CiS) during the Master’s Biomedical Sciences.
