This course offers a survey of economic developments in the main ASEAN member states since the 1960s. Questions are addressed such as the following: What were the determinants of rapid economic growth? Why were Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand so successful, or conversely, why did the Philippines lag behind? How about Indonesia’s achievement in terms of economic and social development? What about Vietnam’s rapid rise to prominence during recent years? What caused the financial crisis of 1997/98? Which measures were taken to combat the crisis? How successful has the recovery been? In which way are the ASEAN economies affected by the current economic downturn?
