First World War

Course
2009-2010

LET OP: Dit vak kan niet gevolgd worden als Contractonderwijs of A la carte onderwijs

Description

The First World War created the modern world. This conflict of unparalleled violence destroyed the relative peace and prosperity of the nineteenth century and its concomitant belief in steady progress of the Age of Enlightenment. In the First World War, the forces that shaped the twentieth century were unleashed: total war, genocide, nationalism and racism. This course focuses on the historical and military aspects of the First World War, as well as on its political, social and cultural consequences. The course includes an optional four-day trip along the frontline of the First World War, with visits to battlefields, trenches, museums, cemeteries and monuments.

The course aims at providing the student with a thorough knowledge of the First World War.

For some students, there is a possibility to do this course for 10 ects by writing an extra essay. Prof. Koen Koch will inform you about this option during the course.
