Description
The course is addressed to students of the Master in Italian Studies and is aimed at stimulating their research interests. Essential knowledge for carrying out comparative investigations on variaties of Italian of different historical periods and geographic areas is provided.
The first part of the course is a general introduction to some syntactic and stylistic aspects that distinguish the prose of Old Italian from Renaissance and Modern Italian.
The second part of the course focuses on syntactic-stylistic aspects chosen together with students. A comparative study among Old Italian, Modern written Italian, Substandard Italian and some dialects of Italy will be carried out.
Course Objectives
Development of skills in Italian syntax, with focus on syntactic changes from Old to Modern Italian. Ability to carry on text analyses and use specific instruments for diachronic investigations (texts, database, etc.)

Assessment method
Students shall study the material presented in class, and do potential in-class/take-home assignments.
Students shall write a brief essay as a final paper, where he/she illustrates the comparative investigation he/she carried out on texts discussed with the teacher. He/she shall provide one or more explanatory hypotheses for the phenomena taken into account.
