Bridging Theory and Practice

Description

This course consists of a series of excursions, visits and small seminars organized specifically for master students Book and Digital Media Studies. In some cases, students will meet and discuss current issues from the field with practitioners, ranging from civil servants and entrepreneurs, to authors and booksellers. In other cases it will concern visits to sites were collections can be seen or specific workshops in which a specific field or expertise will be introduced can be done. A schedule will be presented at the beginning of the academic year or else as soon as possible.
The visits will be organized in such a way that they correspond with the themes and subjects in the courses that run in each specific period. In any case, a three day combined visit to the Gutenburg Museum in Mainz and the Frankfurt Buch Fair at the beginning of October 2010 will be part of the program as well as a visit to the Plantijn Museum in Antwerpen in Flanders and to the Institute of Sound and Image in Hivlersum. The broad themes under which the events can be listed are: (1) policy and practice in cultural heritage and book history, (2) strategies and policies in publishing, (3) government policy, (4) service providers for the publishing industry, (5) new media and technology.
To finish the course successfully students have to write two short essays with a minimum length of 2.500 and a maximum of 3.500 words each on a subject related to the events, in which elements of the excursions, visits and seminars are discussed. The first essay will be delivered at the end of the first semester, the second at the end of the second semester. Exact delivery dates will be pointed out. In some cases students are requested to assist in the organisation of events.
If students will be absent on more than two occasions they will not be able to successfully terminate the course or make arrangements with the course coordinator to employ other activities.
This course is provided in collaboration with the MA Program Journalism and New Media.

Course Objectives

Students learn to understand the broad cultural, political, organizational and corporate context of books, cultural heritage and media, especially how academic knowledge is applied and processes of strategy, policy and innovaton material ‘in practice’.

Assessment
