BA-degree and lecture series Theory of Photography, Film, and Video
Description
In the first three meetings of this seminar the participants discuss the application of theories of photography and formulate research questions on the basis of the lecture series about theories in the first semester.
The second part of the seminar deals with time and space as crucial parameters for constructing a sequence of events in cinema. We will discuss how time and space constitute a necessary basis for causality and psychological motivation in Hollywood movies from the studio era. We will also focus upon some films that deviate from a conventional employment of time and space, by a European director as well as a non-Western director. Next to a close analysis of films we will also discuss relevant theoretical texts, among others by filmmaker Andrei Tarkovski and philosopher Gilles Deleuze.
The last part of the seminar explores how we can apply concepts of time and space/place from auxiliary disciplines such as philosophy, anthropology, sociology, and human geography to provide insights in aspects of time and space/place in photographs and videos. Moreover we will discuss some concepts from non-Western cultures that may throw new light on photographs and videos from many different places around the world.
