Description

Overview of the historical grammar of Hebrew and Aramaic in their various language phases in the light of several extensive case studies.

Course objectives

The ability to place Hebrew and Aramaic grammar within their linguistic setting, gaining a thorough grasp of the characteristics of various historical stages of these languages, and acquiring a sound working knowlegde of relevant approaches currently practised in Historical Linguistics. This course provides students not only with an insight into the development of both Hebrew and Aramaic as separate languages, but also into their mutual relationship throughout their long attested history. Special attention, however, may be paid to either Hebrew or Aramaic, depending on the interests of the participants.
