Course description
This course will present the origins and development of the Minoan, Cycladic and Mycenaean civilisations in the Aegean region. Ecological, social, economic and symbolic aspects of these cultures will be analysed for these first European civilisations.
Learning outcomes
To follow the long-term evolution of society in the Aegean from Neolithic to Final Bronze Age times;
To evaluate academic theories regarding the origins and nature of Europe’s first civilisations in the Aegean;
To appreciate the contribution of symbolic material culture to a deeper understanding of past complex societies.
Mode of delivery
Lectures.
Assessment
Two papers (each 3,000 words minimum), marks lowered for late delivery.
