Description

An advanced course in the methods and techniques used in osteology, for example, age, sex and stature determination, paleopathology and applied medical techniques as aDNA, microscopy, radiography.

Method of instruction

Lectures and practical classes, 5 contact hours per week: 1 hour lecture on research methods in physical anthropology, 1 hour lecture on human osteology, 3 hour practical session with human skeletons

Learning objectives

  • To gain a detailed knowledge of the human skeleton and the relationship between the skeleton and the muscles;

  • To acquire an understanding of how the skeleton grows and how the various stages of development can assist in the determination of age;

  • To learn how dimorphism of the skeleton can allow sex to be recognized;

  • To become familiar with the histology of bone and teeth tissue;

  • To understand the pathology of bone and teeth material and its relationship to soft tissues;

  • To be able to determine and differentiate parts of the human skeleton while being supervised;

  • To learn to recognize the most common pathological abnormalities and identify what injuries or diseases were responsible for them while under supervision.

Language

Languages of instruction with be both Dutch and English.
