Research Methods in Mortuary Archaeology

Description:

An advanced course in the documentation and analysis of taphonomic processes and the reconstruction of burial or cremation practices. The course includes detailed examination of dating techniques, isotope analysis, trace elements analysis, bio-molecular investigations.

Method of instruction:

Lectures and practical classes, 5 contact hours per week: 2 hour lecture on research methods in mortuary archaeology, 3 hour practical session with human material

Required reading:

e.g. Biological Anthropology of the Human Skeleton (Katzenberger & Saunders (eds.), 2008), Forensic taphonomy (Hadlund & Sorg (eds.) , 1997)

Learning objectives:

  • To gain a knowledge of the excavation and documentation methods and techniques (including taphonomy) and the procedures for sampling, for example, for ancient DNA and isotopes;

  • To learn to apply these methods and techniques when being confined by a specific research question;

  • To acquire an understanding of how to analyze cremated remains (e.g. minimal number of individuals, age / sex determination, the degree of burning, and the amount of fragmentation).

Language

Languages of instruction with be both Dutch and English.
