Workshop: Revisiting Carl Andre's 1960's Sculptures

Course
2010-2011

The American Minimalist, Carl Andre, is widely held to be one of the most influential figures of his 1960s generation. In this workshop we shall revisit some of his early sculptures and poems and ask ourselves: ‘what are the wider ramifications of these works? What is their legacy, and how might we make sense of them now, over 40 years later?’ In three sessions, we shall explore three themes: Andre’s interest in segmentation and interchangeability, his relationship to the commodity form, and his approach to materials and materiality.
