Description

1) the principles of internal and external textual analysis;
1a) the internal textual analysis will cover the phonetic, morphological and syntactic variants which texts traditions present;
1b) the analysis will deal with external problems related to the transmission of texts and their edition (the differences between diplomatic and critical edition, the features of manuscripts and ancient books, the interpretation methods of copies).
2) The historical grammar of Italian by the means of some case studies as:
2a) the language of Dante’s Divine Comedy in its six manuscript copies;
2b) the language of Petrarch’s Canzoniere through its definitive and proof copies;
2c) the variants of the Decameron by Boccaccio between the 14 autographic books and three non-autographic books;
2d) the Ariosto’s linguistic proofreading on the three editions of his Orlando Furioso;
2e) the doubts of Tasso on the language from his Gerusalemme Liberata drafts;
2f) the linguistic corrections by Parini on his Giorno, of which there are only partial editions authorized by him, Il Mattino (1763) and Il Mezzogiorno (1765);
2g) the linguistic revision of Manzoni’s Promessi Sposi, of which we have an autographic version (Fermo e Lucia) and two editions edited by the author not without troubles.

The course makes use of PowerPoint, internet videos and Blackboard, which make students familiar with topics of following lessons, as requested. The tutorials are intended to put students into contact with discipline items and research tools. In addiction, students are requested to actively delve into case studies and discuss them in the class.

Course Objectives

After completing the course the students will able to:
a) recognise and define the principles of Italian Philology;
b) illustrate and deepen the main aspects of the historical grammar of Italian in a comparative and contrastive way;
c) identify and put into context linguistic aspects in connection with episodes in the history of Italian;
d) critically analyse literary texts, in order to recognize the cultural and material causes of language use and change.

Assessment method

Written test (50%): test (8 multiple choice questions on linguistic phenomena, 3 closed questions on discipline principles, 1 textual analysis with 4 closed questions)
Paper on the deepening of a course topic (10 pages A4, 30%)
