Description
What is the function of the Dutch sacred song? Can we map its development? In which way have poets and composers contributed to the development? Outside of religious circles this subject has never received a lot of attention. Via this module students will learn to understand a musical genre which was of great importance in the past, both within the church and outside. Students will delve into the form en contents of song books, are introduced to polyphonic church music (both Roman Catholic and as Protestant) as well as to its application in the practice of the Mass and the Office. We will examine the period from the beginnings of Christianity up to 1700.
