Description
Palaeolithic archaeology studies the evolution of human behaviour and human culture. In this course, the 4 ‘big steps’ will be discussed:
1) the earliest archaeological sites in Africa (earliest stone tools);
2) the earliest occupation of Europe (‘Out of Africa’ I);
3) Neandertals in Europe;
4) the origin and evolution of Homo sapiens.
Participants will read and discuss recent scientific publications on topics such as lithic technology, hunting, ‘modern behaviour’ and burial practices.
Course objectives
Ability to describe the key topics, methods and theories in the study of the evolution of human behaviour;
Critical analysis of scientific debates, based on scientific publications.
Ects distribution
The course load will be distributed as follows:
7×2 hours of lectures;
280 pages of literature;
Assignments and essay.
