Description
Many words are ‘complex’; they consist of smaller units which each have their own meaning and/or grammatical function, e.g. wash-able, under-study, over-eat-s. These units are called ‘morphemes’, and they are the concern of the domain of linguistics that is called morphology (or word-formation). This course offers an introduction to the morphology of English. We will consider different types of morphemes (e.g. prefixes, suffixes and roots) and examine the ways in which these can be combined.
Course objectives
Students become acquainted with basic morphological terms and learn to apply these to English data.
