This seminar focuses on patterns of European integration in different policy areas and analyzes the institutional structure and foundations of the European Union (EU). We focus on literature dealing with institutions and decision-making in the EU, including voting patterns in the Council of the EU, and with challenges due to the current international financial crisis. We explore how the EU reacts to political and economic globalization, the ongoing economic crisis, and in which ways we expect it to develop institutionally in view of the foundations created by the European Convention, the Intergovernmental Conference (IGC) and the recent Lisbon Treaty.
