Counter Terrorism

Description

This course examines various aspects of today’s terrorist threat and how to counter it. Before focusing on counter terrorism, it looks at the context and essence of terrorism and its impact on society. Next, the course presents a range of theoretical notions explaining the ways to ‘fight’ terrorism and compares these notions to the practice of counter terrorism in the Netherlands and the United States. Particular attention will be paid to the idea of the ‘war on terrorism’ and its (legal) consequences. Finally, the course looks into the long term effects of counter terrorism and (the limited number of) studies and reports that evaluate CT policies in the period after ‘9/11’

Course objectives

After completing the course the student has a clear understanding of

  • To provide students with skills which help them to analyze the complex and ever-changing phenomenon of terrorism.

  • To provide students with theoretical notions and practical examples in order to better understand the essence of (counter) terrorism.

  • To present and critique various theoretical approaches to understand counter terrorism.

  • To present and critique various practical approaches to counter terrorism.

  • To challenge students to develop their own analysis of counter terrorism by writing a paper comparing theory and the practice of counter terrorism.
