Admission requirements

A BSc in Biology or related subject (University or HLO), with a solid theoretical and practical training in Genetics, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Cell Biology and Microbiology, and sufficient knowledge of Mathematics and Statistics. Students have successfully finalized a research project.

Description

To deepen the knowledge of and insights in one of the research fields mentioned below, by studying given chapters from the text books mentioned below:

  • Molecular Cell Biology: Prof Herman Spaink, Dr. Annemarie Meijer, Dr. Eva Snaar, Dr. Marcel Schaaf
    Book: Molecular biology of The Cell (Alberts, Edition 5)

  • Molecular Genetics: Prof. Paul Hooykaas:
    Book: Genes X (Lewin)

  • Molecular Microbiology: Dr. Arthur Ram, Dr. Dennis Claessen
    Book: Brock Biology of Microorganisms, (Madigan et al. 12th edition)

  • Plant Developmental Genetics: Dr. Remko Offringa
    Book: Plant Biology, Smith, 2010

  • Plant Cell Physiology: Prof. Johan Memelink, Dr. Huub Linthorst
    Book: Plant Physiology (Tiaz and Zieger, 5th edition)

An alternative book on a different field may be selected, but has to be approved by one of the MCB staff, or by another qualified (external) examiner.

Learning goals

Course objectives:
To obtain detailed knowledge on a selected research field, and to test whether a student is able to master detailed information in a limited time (4 weeks).

Final qualifications:
An advanced MSc student with MCB research experience and detailed knowledge on a selected MCB research field.
