Admission requirements
A BSc in Biology or related subject (University or HLO), with a solid theoretical and practical training in Genetics, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Cell Biology and Microbiology, and sufficient knowledge of Mathematics and Statistics. The student should be in the final stage of his/her (last) MSc research project.

Description
In the first 2 weeks the student will read 4 or more experimental scientific papers, and write a short thesis, which should serve as the introduction part of the research proposal. Based on this study the student will formulate the research questions that he/she would like to address in the proposal. In the second two weeks the student will write a detailed research proposal for a four years Ph.D. project, according to the NWO-ALW open competition format.

Course objectives:
To obtain experience in preparing for, planning and writing a PhD research proposal.
Final qualifications:
An experienced MSc student that is able to conceive and plan a PhD study on a MCB research topic.

Mode of instruction
The topic is depending on the particular interest of the student (may be related to the MSc research project), and literature will be selected with help of the supervisor of the (last) MSc project.
Assessment method
This proposal will be discussed with and evaluated by the supervisor of the (last) MSc research project.
