Single Molecule Optics

Course
2012-2013

Description

Recently, a whole new field of optical spectroscopy has appeared: investigations of single nano-objects (molecules, nanocrystals, quantum dots, metal particles, etc.). The aim of these lectures is to present the experimental techniques giving access to single objects. They rely heavily, but not exclusively, on fluorescence microscopy in the far field. As compared to large ensembles, individual objects give rise to special observations and open new experimental and theoretical avenues. These will be illustrated with examples from the recent literature, with an eye on results obtained earlier by traditional ensemble methods.
