Admission requirements

The course is taught in Mandarin. Students must have a prior level of Mandarin at least equivalent to HSK 5. They must also meet all entry requirements for the MA in Chinese Studies.

Description

This course consists of three parts: before-class tasks, class reading activities and after class tasks. First, before-class tasks include reading comprehension and preparation for vocabulary/grammar and will be submitted via Google Docs. Second, students are expected to show their preparation for reading materials during class reading activities. Also, reading speed training will be involved. Last, after-class tasks include written assignments and active participation on the Blackboard discussion board. All the assignments are submitted via Blackboard. Students are also expected to prepare adequately and contribute actively.

Course objectives

  • Help MA students currently at a high-intermediate level to develop Chinese reading skills and be able to digest different reading materials i.e., academic journal, news, short essays, novels and etc.

  • Familiarize students with common genres and styles of texts.
