Mechanical metamaterials


Course Description
We discuss mechanical metamaterials, structured soft matter with emergent collective mechanics, ranging from granular media and patterned elastic media to biomaterials and colloidal assemblies. Hot topics are negative poisson ratio materials, sand robots, non affinity, strain weakening and strengthening and complex self assembly —- in short: cool physics for new weird materials.

Course Objectives
Introduction to elasticity, (buckling) instabilities, jamming and criticality, emergent behavior, role of geometry.
