The EU as a Security Actor

Description

Objective 1: To gain knowledge about the role, scope, developments and complexity of the European Union as a provider of security.
Objective 2: To develop understanding how the EU as a global and security actor can be studied by applying and learning about various theoretical perspectives.
Objective 3: To learn how to write and present a convincing Policy Paper and a theoretically informed essay on an aspect of the EU as a security actor.

Content: This seminar will study the European Union as a provider of security in all its complexity against the backdrop of a changing international security environment. Various theoretical perspectives on the EU as a security actor will be discussed, addressing conceptual issues such as the possibility to study the EU as a unitary actor. Although the external security role of the EU will be central, there will also be attention for the internal and external security nexus and how the EU is broadening its scope to respond to this. Among topics addressed are: the Common Security and Defence Policy, the EU’s security culture, the EU’s security strategy (external and internal), military and civilian capabilities, crisis management operations, border security, EU-NATO cooperation, strategic partnerships and various perspectives of member states.
