Admission requirements

This course is only available for students in the BA International Studies.

Description

The course is intended for learners with no previous background in Hindi or with little knowledge of Hindi. The course will enable students to have a usable proficiency in basic Hindi by developing their listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in the language. This course will lead students to communicate effectively in Hindi in basic day to day situations. Learners will be introduced to Devanagari writing system which is used to write Hindi. In addition to conventional course materials, learners will be introduced to Hindi using variety of audio-video materials including songs and video-clips.

Course objectives

  • Elementary knowledge of vocabulary and sentence structures of Hindi to a simple level to listen, speak, read and write simple spoken language in practical day to day situations.

  • Elementary knowledge of the grammar of Hindi and the ability to apply this knowledge in their own oral and written language.

  • Ability to read and write simple words and sentences in Devanagari script of Hindi.

On successful completion of Hindi-1 Beginners, the students will achieve A1 (Beginners) or A2 (Waystage) level of CEFR.

Mode of instruction

Three two hour tutorials every week

Attending lectures and tutorials is compulsory. If you are not able to attend a lecture or tutorial, please inform the tutor of the course. Being absent without notification can result in a lower grade or exclusion from the final exam or essay.

Course Load

Total course load: 280 hours (10EC)

Attending classes: 72 (= 6 hours per week x 12 weeks)
Preparing classes, exams and extra activities: 208 hours

Assessment method

Review of Beginning Hindi-1 will consist of following components:

  • Attendance, Class preparation and participation – 10 % of final grade

  • Homework and Assignments – 10 % of final grade

  • Quizzes [Dictation, Vocabulary, Grammar etc] (Six) – 40%

  • Project (1 Project) – 10 % of final grade

  • Term End Oral Exam – 15% of final grade

  • Term End Written Exam – 15 % of final grade

The resit will be a written exam of two hours, and will test if the students have reached the end level of this semester. This exam consists of the following components:

  • Reading and writing;

  • Written dialogue;

  • Vocabulary and grammar.

Blackboard will be used. For tutorial groups: please enroll in blackboard after your enrolment in uSis

Students are requested to register on Blackboard for this course.

Blackboard is the primary means of communication between the teacher and students outside the classroom. All learning materials will be also available through Blackboard.

Remarks

For this course attendance and participation is essential. Classes missed for a good reason (to the discretion of the conveners and to be discussed BEFORE the class takes place) will have to be made up with an extra assignment.

As per university rules up to 20% of total classes can only be missed (for a valid reason like illness, accident etc) if it goes beyond that you may not be allowed to take the final exams etc or it will reflect upon your final grade.

Passing this course is an additional requirement for a positive Study Recommendation at the end of the year.
