Description

This course is a follow-up to the course ‘Indo-European Phonology’ (taught in the first semester). In it, the reconstruction of the Proto-Indo-European morphology will be taught. With the use of many examples it will be shown how on the basis of the evidence from all ancient Indo-European languages the original form of nominal and verbal paradigms can be determined. The most important inflextion and conjugation types of the Proto-Indo-European grammar will be treated, as well as the traces these have left in the individual daughter languages. In the course, due attention will be paid to divergent scholarly opinions on the topic, so that the student is well aware of the scholalry debate on certain specific issues.

Course objectives

  • At the end of this course, the student will have a thorough knowledge of and insight into the morphological reconstruction of Indo-European.

  • The student will have a thorough knowlegde of and insight into the morphological system of Proto-Indo-European, as well as the way this system is continuated by the most important daughter languages.
