Description

By contributing new perspectives and by their contribution to the labour force, immigrants can enrich a society. Yet, even in the second and third generation, many communities still languish in relative poverty. In this module we will assess the situation in the Netherlands, and especially that in the Hague where a rich and diverse international community coexists alongside one of the poorest areas in the country (Schilderswijk).

We will examine the international literature on the phenomena of immigration and settlement to look for common issues and to identify interesting initiatives. We will consult with the various stakeholders involved with the immigrant communities – central and local government, foreign embassies, research groups, NGOs and local community groups. In small teams, we will focus on different issue-areas and, after collecting survey data and conducting panel discussions in the communities, we will formulate strategies for local community projects, designed to facilitate better integration into the wider community or improved participation in further education and the labour market.
