Multimodal Translation

Admission requirements

This course is open only to students registered for the Translation in Theory and Practice specialization.

Description

The aim of this course is to familiarize its participants with the challenges a translator faces when translating multimodal discourse. We will explore different types of multimodal translation, such as cartoons and picture books, court interpreting, television subtitling, game localization and software localization. The emphasis will lie on doing translations that a professional translator may be expected to do and discussing theoretical and practical problems.
The course includes guest lectures and a research project on location. Please note that this may involve travel expenses and irregular hours.

Course objectives

  • Knowledge and understanding of the nature of multimodal translation.

  • Ability to analyse and solve theoretical and practical translation problems.

  • Skill in translating multimodal texts from English to Dutch.

Mode of instruction

Seminar

Course Load

  • Time spent on attending seminars: 28 hours

  • Time for studying the compulsory literature: 42 hours

  • Time to prepare translations, annotations and presentations (including reading & research): 210 hours

Assessment method

  • Average mark of two translations handed in during the course 40%

  • Presentation and annotated translation 60%

Resit: students who fail the course may resit the translations.

Blackboard will be used to provide students with an overview of current affairs, as well as specific information about (components of) the course.

Reading materials will be made available via Blackboard.
