Peacebuilding after conflict

Admission requirements

Completion of a prior bachelor level course in international politics, international law or international organizations is strongly recommanded.
The course is only available for students of the MSc Public Administration. This is a specialization seminar for students from the IEG track. To ensure quality of teaching, we limit the number of students in it to 20. Students from another track (PM or GM) who would like to take this course an an elective, please note you need to ask the lecturer per e-mail. You may be asked to take another course if the seminar is full.

Description

Causes of war and civil war as well as other forms of contemporary political violence; methods and means to achieve peace; roles of international organizations; actions required to build institutions for peaceful settlement of conflicts, encouragement of the rule of law, protection of human rights and building democracy.

Course objectives

To better understand conflicts and political and military interventions; prevention of violence, and encouragement of human rights, rule of law and democracy.

Mode of instruction

After about 8 hours of class instruction, students will write individual research papers of 8-10 pp. They present these in class, and make an exam on the material on Blackboard.

Assessment method

Final grade is the average of the oral presentation, the term paper and the exam.

Registration

Registration for every course and exam in USIS is mandatory. For courses, registration is possible from four weeks up to three days before the start of the course.
For exams, registration is possible from four weeks up to ten days before the date of the examination.
