Description

This course is an introduction to the study of bilingual grammars in a Latin American context. Main theoretical and methodological issues will be discussed based on examples drawn from studies of bilingualism in Spanish. Several topics will be presented, from first to second language acquisition, individual to social bilingualism and finally language instruction and language policies concerning bilingualism. Readings, discussions, and practical sessions will center on theoretical issues and methods of data collection.

Course objectives

The students will acquire knowledge of how bilingualism can be studied, from an array of perspectives, starting from language acquisition, to sociolinguistics and language instruction.

  • Hours spent on attending lectures and seminars (2 hours per week x 14 weeks): 28 hours

  • Time for studying the compulsory literature and writing weekly papers: 140 hours

  • Time for preparing presentation: 56 hours

  • Time for preparing final paper: 56 hours

Assessment method

Weekly response papers 30%, final research paper 40% and oral presentation 30%
