Fieldwork (Internship)

Course
2015-2016

Admission requirements

Admission to the MA Linguistics.

Description

It is possible to arrange an internship in a documentation project in Africa, the Americas or South East Asia. The activities can range from curriculum development, preparation of educational materials for mother tongue education or revitalization, documenting oral traditions, developing language policies or helping out with dictionaries (including multimedia) to preparing orthography advice and assisting alphabetization, depending on the needs of the receiving organization. It is possible to collect data for the final thesis at the same time. The best period for such an internship is the first months of the second semester, so that the thesis can be written in the second par t of the semester. It is essential to have your final thesis plan accepted before the internship, to ensure that you can finish your studies within the academic year. It is crucial to plan such an internship far ahead and in consultation with a staff member who is familiar with your area of interest.

Course objectives

To experience working and living in one of the countries where the languages that we study are spoken; to learn how to work within a project; to learn how to work with and for a community; to acquire practical skills to bring a project to a fruitful end in a new and culturally different environment; possibly, to experience data collection in the field.
