Description
This course offers an introductory overview of the developments in Egyptian society from the Roman period till the early years after the Arab conquest.
The growing influence of Christianity and the sudden introduction of Islam had deep impact on both material and immaterial culture, economy and social life. The course deals with a number of aspects such as the rise of monasticism, the development of urban centres and matters such as change and continuity in religious art and architecture.
Course objectives
Understanding of historical and sociological changes in Egyptian society in the first seven centuries of our era;
Insight in the sources available from both archaeology and papyrology;
Ability to Formulate a research question and doing research concerning a subject within the field.
