Theme of BAST in the second year
BAST will focus on research in practice: what does working as a researcher really entail?
Description
During the training of biomedical science students, emphasis is put on learning the theoretical background of physiology and pathology in order to become a good scientist. In addition, significant efforts are made to equip the students with sufficient practical skills in order to perform experiments in a lab. However, to be a skilled scientist, having solid background knowledge and suitable practical expertise is not enough to survive and thrive in an ever-changing scientific environment. A critical attitude and understanding of all the processes that drive scientific research forward are indispensable as well. In the second year BAST line-teaching assignment, the students will become acquainted with all the factors that make a project successful. We will specifically focus on the following topics: funding, publishing, valorisation, progress reports and psychological factors.
The second year BAST assignment involves two separate interviews, one with a young scientist (PhD-student/Post-doc) and the other with his or her supervisor. We will make a short list of all international PhD students in the LUMC so that each small team of students can pick a project in which they are interested. During a lecture, you will be trained in how to conduct an interview. Before and after these interviews we will have several workgroups where we discuss the outcome of both interviews and prepare a written report as well as a final presentation.
Implementation
The year assignment is scheduled parallel with the other courses and must be carried out throughout the year.
Course Objectives
Gain insight into conducting research as well as provide an overview of the factors that determine the success of a research project.
Assessment method
There are no specific course books other than the course brochure. A Blackboard module for the second year line education BAST is available.
Remarks
Attendance is compulsory for all lectures, workgroups and final presentations.

h3. Information for exchange students
This module is part of an English taught semester of the bachelor’s programme in Biomedical Sciences at Leiden University Medical Center. Combining biomedical modules with modules from other programmes in Leiden is difficult or impossible due to different scheduling schemes. Exchange students* with sufficient relevant background knowledge in biology/biomedicine are therefore encouraged and advised to choose the entire module package indicated below (September – end of December 2015).
Immunology (BW), 8 EC
Pathogen-Host Interactions part 2, 3 EC
Infection and Immunity in Practice, 3 EC
Physiology, Basic Concepts, 8 EC
Communication in Science for Exchange students, 1 EC
Biomedical Academic Scientific Training for Exchange Students, 3 ECTS
Applied Electrophysiology for Exchange students, 2 ECTS
*, the modules are obligatory for students from the Karolinska Institute that attend the curricular exchange programme
