This course is only available for students in the BA International Studies.

Description

Persian I is an intensive course for beginners. Persian or farsi is the major language of Iran and Tajikistan, and it is one of the two official languages of Afghanistan. It is also spoken in parts of Uzbekistan. This course provides the students with the basic structures and the basic vocabulary of Persian as it is spoken and written in Iran. The course is based on an interactive method, giving space to the students to practice and to make sure that he/she is progressing in the learning process. Introduction of communicative skills as well as grammar basics will be on the basis of attractive text books, while audiovisual material will help the student to efficiently improve pronunciation as well as listening and fluency skills. During the course and via the course materials the students will acquire knowledge on certain aspects of Iranian culture and society. The course requires a substantial amount of self-teaching and preparation at home and active participation in class.

Course objectives

This course aims at the A1 level of the Common European Framework.

  • Speaking: Learners will acquire communicative skills enabling them to converse about simple and routine matters. They will be able to describe aspects of their personal backgrounds, immediate environments and other matters in areas of immediate need in simple terms.

  • Listening: Learners will be able to understand standard speech on common topics and to extract the main point of messages and announcements provided that people talk slowly.

  • Reading: Learners will be able to read and understand short and simple texts on familiar matters containing basic vocabulary.

  • Writing: Learners will be able to write short notes in Persian script on familiar topics.

Mode of instruction

Three two hour tutorials every week

Attending lectures and tutorials is compulsory. If you are not able to attend a lecture or a tutorial, please inform the tutor of the course. Being absent without notification can result in a lower grade or exclusion from the final exam or essay.

Course Load

Total course load for this course is 10 EC (1 EC = 28 hours), this equals 280 hours, broken down by:

  • Atending classes: 72 hours (6 hrs per week over 12 weeks)

  • Preparing classes, exams and extra activities: 208 hours

Assessment method

  • There is no re-sit test during the course.

  • Learning aim: Use of course contents, including vocabulary items, grammar, Kanji

Assessment

Assessment: Written exam and quiz
Percentage: 60%

  • Learning aim: Use of the target language to communicate with correct pronunciation, Listening/speaking/dictation
    Assessment: In-class oral/listening performance
    Percentage: 20%

Deadline: at most twice/semester

  • Learning aim: Use of the target language to write with suitable vocabulary items and grammar
    Assessment: Writing assignments
    Percentage 20%

Weighing

Assessment: Written exam and quiz: 60%
Assessment: In-class oral/listening performance: 20%
Assessment: Writing assignments: 20%

To complete the final mark, please take notice of the following: the final mark for the course is established by determining the weighted average.
To pass the course, the average has to be 5.5 at least.

Resit

If the final grade is insufficient (lower than a 6), there is the possibility of a resit.
The resit will be a written exam of two hours, and will test if the students have reached the end level of this semester. This exam consists of the following components:

  • Reading and writing;

  • Written dialogue;

  • Vocabulary and grammar.

Remarks

For this course attendance and participation is essential. Classes missed for a good reason have to be discussed with the language instructor BEFORE the class takes place. Frequent absence will inevitably lead to lower participation grades, or denied access to the final exam.
Passing this course is an additional requirement for a positive Study Recommendation at the end of the year.
This course uses Integrated communicative language learning method. Therefore active participation in the classroom activities is essential for successful learning outcomes.
