Admission requirements

A completed introduction to experimental phonetics

Description

The main goal of this workshop is to offer participants both the knowledge and the experience needed to make independent use of the equipment and software which is used in experimental phonetics.

Course objectives

Attention is paid to the underlying principles, so that the equipment and software can be used in a creative yet scientifically correct way. The possibilities of adding functions to the software by means of (simple) scripts are also addressed. Finally, students are trained to find and remove the cause of common problems in a structured way.

Mode of instruction

Workshop

Students will attend 13 lessons/instructions of 2 hours, weekly. Each week, before the next class, students have to complete a practical assignment. These experiments are to be carried out in the lab, alone or in small groups. A short report of each experiment has to be written.

Course Load

The course load of this course is 140 hours.

  • hours spent on attending lectures and seminars: 14 * 2

  • time for studying the compulsory literature: 14 * 2

  • time to setup and complete a weekly experiment: 14 * 4

  • time to write/correct a comprehensive report 14 * 2

Assessment Method

Students have to complete a practical assignment before next class. Evaluation is based on the progress made in the laboratory and on the written reports. There will be no final examination

Blackboard will be used to provide students with an overview of current affairs, as well as specific information about (components of) the course.
