Strategic Studies

Description

This course introduces the students to the main concepts, theories and debates in the field of strategic studies. It will address the history of strategic thought going back to the nineteenth century. It aims to, furthermore, elaborate on the main ideas on the causes and conduct of war and the frameworks and theories that have been developed to understand and dissect the versatile phenomenon of war in the modern period.

Course objectives

Objective 1: This course will focus on basic knowledge acquisition in the field of strategic studies, its history, theories and practices.
Objective 2: Skills will be tested based on a written form of assessment.

Total course load for the course 5 EC/ 140 hours
-Hours spent on attending lectures: 14 hours
-Time for studying the compulsory literature: 80 hours
-Time for completing assignments/ writing papers (including reading/research): 46 hours

Assessment method

  • paper 10 %

  • take home essay 90 %

The final grade for the course is established by determining the weighted average.

Admission requirements

Basic knowledge of Political Science is required to take this course. We recommend that you have followed at least 10 ECTS of courses on government and politics.
