Beginner's Turkish 2.
This course goes in parallel with Pre-Intermediate Turkish, both courses must be taken simultaneously.

Description

This course is designed to complement Pre-Intermediate Turkish with beginning to low-intermediate knowledge of Turkish grammar, vocabulary, spoken interaction and pragmatics through the use of audio-visual aids selected from Turkish broadcast media, print media and social media. Therefore, it is mandatory that students in this course also enroll in Pre-Intermediate Turkish.

Course objectives

The main goal of this course is to practice language forms and structures learned in first and second semester Turkish and to put them in better social and pragmatic perspective. By the end of the course, students will have mastered basic rules of grammar and conversation covered in Beginning Turkish I, II and Pre-Intermediate Turkish as well as familiarized themselves with pragmatic rules of welcoming, greeting, routine exchanges, requesting, talking on the phone and leave-taking, and vocabulary of topics such as health, food, family and relationships.

Assessment method

  • Class participation: (10%) 100 points

  • Film review: (20%) 2 x 100 points

  • Presentations: (40%) 4 x 100 points

  • Final project: (30%) 300 points

  • Participation: Attending classes, participating in discussions

  • Film review: Each student will watch a Turkish movie and write a review/presentation (pitch2peer) about it. There will also be an in-class movie activity. For this latter movie, each student will write a reflection paper. More on the format and content tba.

  • Presentations: Each student will make a short presentation twice on a audio and/or visual material from Turkish culture. The material can be a photo, ad, brochure, sound recording, tv commercial, clip from a movie, tv series, cartoon, documentary.

  • Final project: There will be a final project which will consist of a written and oral presentation part. For this project, you will be asked to do a research on a topic, interview a Turkish person, attend a cultural event or visit a Turkish family, and write a short report about your descriptions, observations or findings. More on the format and content tba.

Resits are allowed only for the final project, and thus, can affect only the 30% of the final grade.
