Description

This course gives an insight into the origins of the historical styles of jazz music.Improvisation and swing play an essential role in this. In addition to this the social, cultural and economic backgrounds against which jazz developed will be explored. The usual historical classifications fall short when describing the developments in jazz during the last three decades. In class we will approach the historiographical problems that have arisen in de classical history of jazz. Possible alternatives will be presented for the approach and classification of contemporary jazz.

Schedule

2016-2017, Second semester.

The courses take place at the Lipsius building (Cleveringaplaats 1, Leiden), room 148 or 147 (see the dates below), on Mondays from 18.45-20.15 hrs.

Monday 6 February 2017 (first lecture) and UPDATE!!: Monday 13 February 2017: Lipsius 028.
Monday 20 February 2017 through 10 April 2017: Lipsius 147.

PLEASE NOTE: the exam is 10 April 18.45-20.15 hrs in Lipsius 147.
PLEASE NOTE: There will not be a meeting on Monday 13 March 2017.
