Topics in Syntax and/or Semantics: The Syntax of Roots

Admission requirements

Students must have taken the equivalents of Syntax 1 and Syntax 2 of the Leiden BA programme, and preferably have also taken the MA course Syntax: current issues.

Description

In this course, we trace the development of Distributive Morphology, and examine the core issues connected to Distributive Morphology and morpho-syntax – in particular, the meaning of roots in isolation and in context, the syntax of roots, as well as issues connected to the building up of morpho-syntax.

Course objectives

  1. Students learn Distributive Morphology from the most basic concepts to the most current issues.
    1. Students further learn argumentation within syntactic theory, and the application of syntactic theory to problems of morphology.

Attendance of lectures: 26 hours
Studying compulsory literature: 100 hours
Preparation for presentation, discussion, and term paper: 154 hours

Assessment method

Presentation and discussion: 30%
Term paper: 70%

Resit: students who fail the course may resit the exam and/or course paper.
