Description

Introduction into the Egyptian hieroglyphic script and the grammar of Middle Egyptian. Middle Egyptian is the classical phase of the Egyptian language, and it is the essential basis for learing other phases of the language.

Course objectives

In an intensive seminar knowledge of signs and vocabulary will be acquired in combination with the principles of Middle Egyptian grammar. At the end of the course the student should be able to read sentences in the original script. The seminar provides the basis for continuing with classes in reading texts and in other phases of the language, such as Old and Late Egyptian, Demotic and Coptic. Knowledge of the hieroglyphic script is also required for the study of other forms of the script such as hieratic.

Seminar

Course Load

Total course load 10 EC x 28 hours= 280 hours

  • Lectures: 72 hours
  • Study of compulsory literature: 60 hours
  • Preparation exam: 144 hours
  • Exam(s): 4 hours

Assessment method

Written examination with short open questions. A series of tests in the sessions of the seminar (10%), a mid-term examination (30%) and a final examination (60%).

Weighing

The final mark for the course is established by determining the weighted average.

Resit

The tests and the mid-term exam do not have a resit. In case the final grade of the course is insufficient, students can take the resit which will cover the entire material of the course and the mark of the resit will replace all previously earned marks.

Blackboard

Blackboard will be used for: the distribution of materials for practice.
