Systems Pharmacology



The aim of the research within the Systems Pharmacology cluster is to develop pharmacotherapy based on individual patient needs. We do this by combining advanced analytical tools from the LACDR Division of Analytical Biosciences and quantitative pharmacology concepts from the LACDR Division of Pharmacology. These core strengths meet in the field of Systems Pharmacology.

A wide range of experimental and computational methods are applied in our research, covering translational research from in vitro methods (e.g. organ-on-a-chip) and preclinical models (e.g. microdialysis) to humans, as well as direct patient-related research on clinical samples (e.g. metabolomics) or data (e.g. population modeling) obtained from collaborating hospitals. The research of the cluster Systems Pharmacology will be reflected in the minor Systems Pharmacology.

Course Objectives

  1. Obtaining an understanding of the main scientific concepts underlying the research field of Systems Pharmacology.
  2. Obtaining an understanding of the relevance of Systems Pharmacology to develop a personalized medicine strategy.

Mode of instruction

There will be lectures on metabolomics and pharmacology and on different data analysis methods used in these fields. Students will get hands-on experience with some of these methodologies in hands-on sessions and they will work on a proposal for new research based on a case study.

Assessment method

The final grade will be the based on the grade of the written exam (individual grade) and of the oral presentation and written report of the case study (group grade), according to a 60/20/20 ratio. Students will pass the course if the grade for the written exam is ≥ 5.0 and their average grade is ≥ 5.5.

Admission requirements & Registration

This course is mandatory for and restricted to students who do the Minor ‘Computational approach to Disease Signaling and Drug Targets’ (CADSDT; the entire Minor or only Part 1) or the Elective Module DSDT. The same admission criteria apply to this course as for the respective afore mentioned programs.
