BA-degree, course is ONLY accessible to students in the Master Program Film and Photographic Studies

Description

This course will examine both the ‘filmic turn’ in recent art practice (i.e. the so-called artist’s film) and current curatorial practices concerning the projected and moving image. The course will consist of a series of seminar meetings in which critical literature is examined and students develop their own academic research project, which may consist of a proposal for a film programme in collaboration with the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. Students will also be introduced to the professional field by means of visits to exhibitions and institutions for the presentation and research of moving images.

Course objectives

  • To develop skills of oral presentation;

  • To conduct archival research in the field of art and cinema;

  • To develop skills of academic and critical writing;

  • To aquire knowledge of the curatorial history of film exhibitions and programmes.

Course Load

Total course load for the course: 10 EC = 280 hours.

  • Hours spent on attending lectures, seminars, excursions: 3 hours per week x 12 weeks = 36 hours

  • Time to prepare three presentations: 18 hours

  • Time for studying the compulsory literature: 66 hours

  • Time to write two papers and comments: 160 hours

Assessment method

  • Oral Presentation (Pass/Fail)

  • Research Paper (30%)

  • Film Program proposal (70%)

Resit:

The resit is taken only for the insufficient parts.

Exam review:

How and when an exam review will take place will be disclosed together with the publication of the exam results at the latest. If a student requests a review within 30 days after publication of the exam results, an exam review will have to be organized.

Blackboard will be used to provide students with an overview of current affairs, as well as specific information about (components of) the course.

Reading list

Literature will be announced in Blackboard before the beginning of the course.
